Michael has also written articles that have appeared in the Watauga Democrat, the Mountain Times, the Avery Journal-Times, the Yancey News-Journal, Civil War News, Estatoe (the newsletter of the Yancey Historical Association), and the newsletter of the Caldwell County Historical Society, among others.

Michael is the editor of the newsletter for the Avery County Historical Society and Museum. He frequently writes book reviews for the Florida Re-enactors Online News Magazine and for the Avery Journal-Times.
